Russian invasion of the Chechen capital.

russian forces were porrly organised and trained and thought that by pummelling the city with rockets and artillery beforehand and then moving in with large armoured formations that the city would be a walk-over. However, the Chechan fighters put up a stiff defence.

Chechan units operated relativly automomously in small units and picked of large numbers of tanks and armoured fighting vehicles with anti-tank missiles and close quarter fighting. However, their central command was unable to organise them to carry out organised assaults.

The Russians eventially used infantry to go from building to building and just over a month later they captured Grozney.
