Death Of Major General Qassem Soleimani - 2020 ().

On 3 January 2020 the United States carried out a precision airstrike on an entourage of high ranking Iranian commanding officers at Baghdad Airport, killing Major General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

Major General Qassem Soleimani was commander of the Qods Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units.

The following day they carried out further airstrikes on three vehicles near al-Taji camp north of Baghdad killing Shubul al-Zaidi, the leader of the Popular Mobilization Units.

Shubul al-Zaidi was a prominent commander withing the PMU. Reports suggest that other high ranking officers were also killed including Hamid al-Jazrawi and Ra’d al-Kwrawi.

It is thought that the attack was carried out by a MQ-9 Reaper drone armed with AGM-114 Hellfire missiles.
