Congolese forces advance on Rutshuru in North Kivu province in an operation to take out Musabimana Juvenal, alias general Jean-Michel Africa, the leader of the Hutu Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) which formed in the DRC following the 1994 Tutsi genocide in neighbouring Rwanda.
The operation was extended to wipe out other foreign rebel forces around Rutshuru.
The FDLR had been a source of friction between Rwanda and Uganda, with Rwanda claiming that Uganda is supporting FDLR rebels who have carried out recent attacks in Rwanda.
