Basic start for the First Liberian civil War. This starts off in December 1989 when Charles Taylor enters Liberia for the Ivory Coast. It goes on until May/June 1990. By June 1990 the NPFL were laying seige to Monrovia which is unfortunatly just a bitoff the map to the South West (I have cheated and put it on the map. its location is wrong, it should be about 3 hexes West, but it isnt too great a distortion. I didnt spot that when I selected the map, I assumed the game play work for to the seige of Gbarnga which took place in May. As such, I think you can assume that each turn is a few days.
This whole war has a lot of intruging angles, for example, how did Charles Taylor escape from a US prison and get to Liberia with enough resources to start a civil war?
The background to Liberia is actuallyinteresting as it appeared to be an American colony 100 years earlier with a focus on reversing the transportation of slaves, but the slaves they sent back replicated the slave plantations of the US and made slaves of the native Liberians. When Samuel Doe became became elected prime minister he ended the slave trade. The interesting issue her is why Charles Taylor chose to challenge that. I dont really know, but the Vicevideo puts an interesting perspectiveon the situation.
The game starts with Charles Taylor and his company entering from the Ivory Coast. Over the next few turns he rallies thousands of NPFL rebels. I have given the Liberian governement some limited reinforcements including mechanised infantry, armour and artillery but from a glance I dont think its significant.
Essentially the war continues until Samuel Doe is captured in Monrovia and alledgedly eaten by Charles Taylor. After this the structure of the civil war changes for the worse and continues for a number of yers.
