After the Soviets left Afghanistan on 14 February 1989 the Mujahideen surrounded Jalalabad as well as Kabul and Khost.
By 6 March 1989 the Mujahideen attacked Jalalabad with about 10000 troops. The Afghanistan's defended with 4500 troops and put up stiff resistance with air support from a variety of aircraft including MiG-21's. Jalalabad was hoped to have been the first major city to have fallen to the Mujahideen.
The Mujahideen shelled the city with over 12000 shells and rockets.
The pace of the attack slowed and by mid-May 1989 most of the Mujahideen fighters drifted away.
Palistan admitted arming and harbouring the Mujahideen but denid that their forces were fighting along side them.
The Mujahideen were armed with Stinger missiles that they had bought from the US but refused to sell them back when the US requested to do so in the fear that organisations hostile to the US might get hold ofthem.
