M23 Rebellion - 2012 (M23 Rebellion).

This represents the 19 November 2012 march on Goma in which the Rebels captured Goma.

The M23 Rebellion was led by rebel elements of the Congo army, and ex CNDP members, although it is said that they were essentially supported by the Rwandan and Ugandan Governemnts.

The name M23 derives from the 23 March 2009 agreement made between the CNDP, a more rebel unit, and the Congolese government. it was claimed by the M23 rebels that the government had not lived up to its agreement.

Earlier in 2012 they took control of Bunagana, seen on map,  and then later towards the end of the year attacked other locations and moved towards Goma, a large city which they took.

After negotiations they left Goma and were about a year later defeated by the Congolese governemnt backed by the UN.

This probably isnt a great strategic battle and I think there are too many units for the M23 movement but it makes a little sense if they are going to win.

An intereesting feature is the presence of the MONUSCO units which are essentially the UN (The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo). The Wikipedia articles states that helicopters were used which I have included for ground attacks, although the chit is a Hind and I doubt the UN used them but I have yet to look into what UN units were used. However, based on the image on the Wikipedia page I have also uncluded a UN mechanised infantry battalion. This is the first game where I have used UN troops, I think.

The back drop to this is the Congo War which was much bigger. Following the Congo War the rebels agreed to become a political party and have their prisoners released. I dont know the full extent of all the relationships but the Congo war ended in 2003 and the M23 movement were essentially disenfranchised by the results of political activity although its probably more complex than that.
