This scenario depicts the Malagasy Uprising or the Madagascar Civil War of 1947-8 by the Nationalists against the French.

The Nationalists get the upper hand to begin with but the French end up shipping in some large trop units. Although there are more Nationalists, many of them are armed only with spears.

The uprising begins on 29 March 1947.

By April 1947 the French had 18,000 troops in Madagascar. By 1948 they have 30,000.

The Nationists fight with about 2,000 irregular nationalist fighters, many of whom were second world war veterans. However, peasants rise up, mainly in the south and along the eastern rain forests. In total there are about 1,000,000 peasants.

The French carry out many atrocities including throwing prisoners and women out of airplanes, carrying out collective punishment, burning villages and raping women.

Eventially the French regain control by December 1948 and the Nationalists dispearse into the rain forest.

Madagascar gained independence in 1958.

In 1967, 29 March was declared an annual holiday.
