1st February 1987
In February 1987 Zimbabwe launched an airmobile assault to recapture the Mutarara railway bridge.
It was an easy win and most of the RENAMO rebels fled to Malawi further north.
The bridge was important because it brought coal from the Moatize area to the port at Beira.
This was the first direct engagement by Zimbabwe units in the Mozambique Civil War this far north after it became apparent that the FRELIMO forces could not cope with the RENAMO rebel activity.
It is worth noting that the bridge is a railway bridge and not a road bridge. However, there are no railway line features for the map so you will have to use your imagination.
