The first battle of the South African Border War, also known as the Namibian War of Independence and the Angolan Bush War which lasted for 23 years.
SWALA members had set up a training camp at Ongulumbashe which included defensive trenches.
The SADF attacked it with army and police units in eight helicopters on 26 August 1966.
The battle was also known as Operation Blouwildebees.
The day is now a national holiday in Namibia known as Heroes' Day. The United Nations recognises the holiday as Namibia Day.
