I got this game out of The Bear Went Over The Mountain, and im still on the map, but I just want to say that the map just doesnt match up with anything, so much so that im wondering if its justmade up. I guess Spinakalacha ust isntin Google Maps. But nor is Spina Kalacha, and nor is Grakalacha. The scale is all wrong and none of the roads match up. THe writer starts off by saying that his battalion was 500km away. At first I took that as it was because the book justifies that buy saying that the people were not behind the war and troop densiy was low. However, 500km no matte how you look at it is in Iran, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan or the Arabian Gulf. OK, he left at 0400 on 24 December and arrived at 1600 on 30 December which is 36 hours, at maybe 50 km per hour is about 1800 km, but stopping for fuel andnavigating difficult roads even a third of that covers 500km, which still equated to a battalion density in Afghanistan of no troops at all. Combined with the fact that no matter how I look at the map I cant match anything up whatsoever. To make matters worse, some other hex game maker has covered this battle and their map is totally generic with,in my opinion, no reference to local geography at all.
The bottomline is that I think my map should reflect somthing that you can reference on Google maps, unless Google maps is the disinformation source? and I have put Spinakalacha randomly where it is. In short, I dont know where Spinakalacha is and I cant find any reference to it at all. Further, I fail to see how it could have been so important as theres nothing special about the geography and there are lots of other villages in that area.
All I can add on the accuracy note is that things have maybe changed a bit since 1988 and maybe the naming system in translation is different.
Either way, I thik my interpretation is a good enough approximation.
I will note now that im keeping this at the same level as ever but I think this action was more lower level, ie platoons and squads,in the village, so the village is one hex. The map in the book, The Bear Went Over The Mountain has a scle that is 1km across the entire east west width, and they still appear to have the entirety of Kangahar in a small spot to the top right.
I wanted to choose a bigwide map for this and have you drive your battalion 500km to the sound of theguns, but when I looked at it I decided I didnt want to include the curvature of the earth in my map and so you have a small regular map instead.
It will probably take me ages to complete this as im permanently busy, I had to steal a bit of sleep time just to get this map started.
