2016
Map to show action around Taiz in March 2016. Unit details to follow.
Taiz is in Yemen and was mostly captured by Houthis forces who are loyal to the former president of Yemen in 22 March 2015.
By 16 August 2015 Hadi forces had recaptured most of the city.
However, they have been fighting ever since and the city currently reflects a front line between the two, and more forces involved in the Yemen Civil War.
As well as the Houthis and Hadi forces there are forign mercenaries, militias, Al-Qaeda and ISIL forces. On top of all of that there is a coallition of 10 Arab states including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates who are mainly provding air attacks and are supported by western nations including the UK.
The BBC article reports that Al-Queda units are fighting with the coallition forces which are Western backed to assault Taiz and rout the Houthi forces. It also reports that the Houtis control all road in an d out of Taiz while the Hadis control the center.
There is a mercenary element to this fighting also. THe Sputnik News article states that the private US military company DynCorp has sent mercenaries into Yemen to replace the forces initially supplied by the Blackwater mercenary company, many of whom were killed. The article states that UAE has promised $3bn to support that effort.
The article points out that 99.9% of all bullet and bombs used in the conflict are of US origin.
The second BBC link states that it is the Saudi coalition that is causing the most civilian casulties in the war, mainly through airstrikes. It states that Saudi Arabia has been pummeling Yemen by air, sea and ground for a year now in order to support the Hadi forces.
There are a lot of interesting articles on the Press TV site, I wont link to them all, but the one titled Yemeni forces target Saudi mercenaries with ballistic missile seems particularly intriguing.
Mix-News1 has some good pictures of the damage caused to the Cairo Citadel by Saudi air strikes.
